Keswick Swifts
Keswick Swifts are a community group, formed in June 2022, with the aim of doing everything we can to promote and support the conservation of Swifts in Keswick and the surrounding area.
We work closely with Penrith Swifts and participate in the national Swifts Local Network. We have frequent, good contact with Kendal Swifts and Sedbergh Community Swifts and have found the advice, experience and encouragement of all these groups invaluable.
Our Core Group meets regularly to exchange information, decide what we should be doing, and work together towards our aims. Our members are also involved with roles in Cumbria Bird Club, Skiddaw U3A Birdwatching Group, Keswick Natural History Society and Penrith Swifts. Additionally, some members volunteer with the RSPB, through their West Cumbria and North Cumbria Groups.
We also have a wider Swifts Interest Group, with whom we communicate several times a year via email. If you would like to join this mailing list please get in touch through the contact page.
So what do we do?
Put briefly,
We promote awareness, respect and affection for the Swifts, and awareness of threats to Swifts in the Keswick area, through articles in the Keswick Reminder, information nights and talks.
We carry out an annual survey of Swift nest sites throughout the town, and in the wider area, so we can try to ensure those nest sites are protected.
We encourage and help people to put up Swift boxes or Swift bricks, and to welcome Swifts that nest in their houses; and get involved in the planning process, when we think this might be useful.
